Lexia Core5

One of Woodbury's resources for reading intervention is an online program called Core5. Students who are currently reading below grade level are encouraged to use Core5 at home for at least 20-40 minutes per week.

Parents who want to help their child catch up on reading skills should encourage their child to utilize Core5 at home. Students will need headphones to use with the reading program, and parents are NOT allowed to help as the program provides teachers data and information regarding the student's current reading progress.

The parent letter and access information can be found online.  A Lexia lessons checklist can also be found online.

Math Facts Practice and Testing

MAth_BannerDay.png

In third grade, your student is expected to master their multiplication and division facts 0-10. We will complete multiplication and division assessments in the following order: 10, 5, 2, 4, 8, 3, 6, 9, 7, (11, 12). *11s and 12s are not required for third grade, but are used as a challenge for students who are ready and have completed previous levels.

Students will take fluency assessments weekly (see picture below). Assessments have 20 multiplication equations on one side and 20 division equations on the other side. Students are given 3-minutes for each side to complete. When assessments are graded, they will be returned to the student with a sticker indicating if the child has passed the level, or if the student needs to keep practicing. Students will progress at their own pace. It is expected that students study their Math Facts regularly.

The flashcards can be downloaded and printed at home. You may want to use thicker paper to prevent seeing through the flash card. You may also choose to print them on a single side of the paper and then glue the printed flash cards onto index cards. It is up to you and your child.

Amazon Wish List

Amazon Wish List

An old African proverb once said, "It takes a village to raise a child," and that indeed still reigns true today (especially during a pandemic!).

Please consider selecting an item off our Amazon classroom wish list to donate. Many times, parents have asked me what they can bring in to support learning in the classroom, and it’s always difficult to think about it on the spot. And so, another parent suggested I make an ongoing wish list for those times when I realize our kids could really benefit from certain school supplies, books and learning toys.

Items on our wish list are things we could always use in our classroom to help things run smoothly. Items from this list are completely optional, but we do use them routinely for various activities, read alouds, treasure box items, etc. Please keep us in mind and feel free to send in any of these items throughout the year. Wish list items also make great options as a class gift for student birthdays! Your gift will help benefit and provide countless children great joy for years and years to come!

Again, our class greatly appreciates any donations! THANK YOU!

California Regions

As part of our social studies unit, the students learned about the four main California regions- coast, valley, desert, and mountain. Students read through unit lessons, took notes, and are working to create beautiful flip books showcasing the four California regions.

Students should have all notes on the inside completed, then use the directed drawing video to draw each of the covers for the four regions. All pictures should be fully colored and fully outlined. Samples are below.

Third Grade Flipbook

During the first week of third grade, the students worked on a flipbook. It was a great project to kick off the new year. The kids did such an amazing job on them. They are all so colorful and well-done.

First Week of School

This week has been such a whirlwind! In just a few short days, I have already fallen in love with my new students, and I am just in awe of how polite and well-mannered they are. The students consistently use polite words such as "please" and "thank you." They are helpful, thoughtful, and respectful. Room 14's parents should be proud.

This website is designed to give parents a "window into the classroom." My hope is that it helps solve the dilemma that many parents face when they ask their child, "So what did you do in school today?" And the child's only response is a lackluster, "I don't know" or "Nothing." I will post many updates and pictures of what the children are specifically learning in class so that parents are aware of what occurs in the classroom.

Here are a few snapshots of what occurred this week so far.
